Three Veterans Agree to Terms
INDEPENDENCE, MO (October 2, 2013) – With the Missouri Comets season set to begin in a little over fifty days, new head coach, Vlatko Andonovski, has secured the veteran leadership he needs to be successful this season. The Missouri Comets announced that they have reached agreements with midfielder Vahid Assadpour, goalkeeper Danny Waltman and forward Stefan St. Louis. Waltman will be back between the pipes for the Comets for another exciting season, while St. Louis has extended his agreement through the 2014-2015 season. Assadpour also extended his current agreement, through the 2015-2016 season, and added the title of Player/Assistant Coach. Per league and team policies, additional contract details were not disclosed.
Vahid Assadpour has been a part of the new Missouri Comets since the team returned to the Major Indoor Soccer League in 2010. In three seasons with the team, he has played in 67 of 69 regular season games, scoring 49 goals and tallying 52 assists. His 161 points are second on the team in that time span. In his first season as the team’s captain, he played in every Comets game, including the team’s run to the MISL Championship Series. He was named MISL Player of the Week after recording 5 assists and 2 goals in the opening game of the season. Andonovski will rely on Assadpour’s leadership even more this season as an assistant coach.
“Vahid is one of the best players and leaders on our team,” said Andonovski when talking about Assadpour’s new role. “He will now be my eyes on the field and will be able to help us stay on strategy throughout every match.”
Danny Waltman was the first player signed by the Comets in 2010 and continues to be a favorite of fans across the league. From the very beginning he has displayed a desire to take this team to the top of the MISL. Before the Comets had played one game, he spent multiple hours calling the team’s first season ticket holders and thanking them for being the first fans. He is normally the last player off the field after games and the first one to show at public appearances.
Going into his fourth year with the Comets, Waltman continues to be one of the best goalkeepers in the league. He owns all of the Comets team records for goalkeepers and continuously ranks among the top three goalkeepers statistically in the league. He led the league during the 2011-2012 season in games played (23), minutes played (1,365 minutes, 31 seconds) and saves (302), and his 25 postseason saves helped propel the Comets to their second consecutive MISL semifinals appearance. Last season, Waltman made 42 saves as he backstopped his team to their first ever MISL Championship appearance.
Stefan St. Louis is one of the newest players on the Comets, having signed with the team early last season. Prior to that, he played for the Detroit Waza. The 6’2” 170 lb. forward brings a unique mix of size and speed that fits well in the indoor game. He made appearances in 12 games last season, scoring two goals and recording four assists, before an injury cut his year short.
The Comets begin their fourth season at the Independence Events Center with a rematch of the exciting 2013 MISL Semi-finals against the Milwaukee Wave on November 16th. Season tickets are available for as low as $128 by calling 855.4KC.GOAL. Single game tickets go on sale October 25th at 10a.m. CT.
