By Adding Former KC Comet, Team Adds Another Scoring Threat for Playoff Run
(Kansas City, MO) The Comets Major Indoor Soccer League team today announced that they have acquired elite Forward, Anthony Maher from the Chicago Riot. Maher, a former Comet, was signed by the Riot last summer after the Philadelphia Kixx of the MISL disbanded. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Anthony Maher, born in Cape May, New Jersey, started his professional indoor career in 2002 with the Cleveland Force of Major Indoor Soccer League. That year, he was named the Force’s Team Rookie of the Year and selected to the All League Rookie First Team. In 2003, the Force traded Maher to the Kansas City Comets, where he was named the Comets’ "Newcomer of the Year" producing 28 goals and 10 assists. He followed that with 20 goals and 5 assists in only 14 games his second season with the Comets before tearing his ACL. In 2004 Maher signed with the Milwaukee Wave United of the USL A-League, playing one season with them. He has played with the Chicago Storm of the USL, then the MISL’s Milwaukee Wave, and prior to this season, Maher played for the Philadelphia Kixx since 2008. Maher is also a member of the United States National Futsal team and a National Team 'pool player' that took part in the 2007 Pan-American Games in Brazil. Maher was also inducted into the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame in the Spring of 2009.
For the Comets, Maher gives them an additional scoring threat as they fight for the last playoff spot. In five games this season with the Riot, Maher scored four goals to go along with five assists, totaling 13 points. At 6 feet tall, Maher becomes a big, physical target up front for the team.
“This is a great move for the team,” said Head Coach, Kim Roentved. “To add a quality player and bona fide scorer like Anthony this late in the game for a playoff run, shows that we are committed to doing anything we can to keep our season going.”
For Maher, it’s a chance to come back to one of his favorite places to play. “I am so excited to be back in Kansas City, which I think is one of the greatest soccer cities in the county,” he said. “To be a Comet again and play for a legendary coach like Coach Roentved, on top of being in a playoff chase…this is a dream come true.”
The Comets stand at 7-11 on the season, and the team’s next game is at home this Sunday, March 6th at 3:10 p.m. against the Chicago Riot. This will be the team’s last regular season home game of the year at the Independence Events Center. This will be the sixth meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Comets holding a 3-2 lead in the series. The Comets, winners of three in a row, have suddenly pulled into a tie for third place in the standings and also tied for the third and final playoff spot with the Omaha Vipers, making Sunday’s game even more important.
