COMETS ANNOUNCE THE SIGNING OF BYRON ALVAREZ
Oct 25, 2010
(Kansas City, MO) - The Comets Major Indoor Soccer League Team has announced the signing of veteran forward, Byron Alvarez. Born in Mexico City, Alvarez was a major contributor for last year’s Monterrey LaRaZa MISL Championship team.
Alvarez began playing professional soccer when he was sixteen, starting with a string of minor league Mexican clubs. In 2002, he signed with the MetroStars (now the New York Red Bulls) of the MLS. In 2003, he moved to the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division, where he would later become the team’s all-time leading scorer with 41 goals and 91 total points. In 2007, Alvarez was selected by Monterrey LaRaZa in the MISL expansion draft. On last season’s championship team, Alvarez scored 11 goals and had 6 assists in 14 games. In 2008, while LaRaZa was part of the National Indoor Soccer League, Alvarez was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player. From 2007-2009, he scored 39 goals for LaRaZa.
“Byron is a big-time scorer with a terrific shot,” said Comets head coach, Kim Roentved. “By signing a guy who is a former league MVP, a former member of the MISL’s most recent championship team, and Portland’s all-time leading scorer, I’d say we added one heck of a player today.”
Alvarez has signed a two year contract with the team.
The newest version of the Comets begins play at the Independence Events Center on Friday, November 12th against the Milwaukee Wave. For more information about the Major Indoor Soccer League, please visit the League’s official website www.MISL.net.
